James Vickers

Registered Social Worker

James Vickers, MSW RSW is a Registered Social Worker providing counselling / therapy for individuals, couples (including LGBQT+), families, and children. He particularly enjoys supporting couples, teens, parents, and families to build strong and healthy relationships.

James brings many years experience to his practice and believes that the combination of Science (evidence-based approaches) and Art (developing a therapeutic relationship by integrating and implementing ideas in creative ways) is key.  This combination allows for clients to be comfortable opening up while successfully achieving their goals.

James Vickers MSW RSW completed his Masters of Social Work at the University of Toronto

James has been working as a Psychotherapist for 30 years in both community and private practice settings. He provides a non-judgemental and safe space, allowing his clients to feel in control of the therapy experience while working collaboratively to make meaningful, goal-oriented changes. He works holistically, drawing from many different evidence-based approaches individualized for unique clients.

James’ Therapy Approach

Therapy for individuals, couples, teens, parents and families uses a therapy approach that is both client-centered and strengths-based. James’ extensive professional experience spans a plethora of mental health concerns including work with individuals for anger management and addictions.

Therapy sessions integrates a wide-range of models including:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
  • DBT (Dialectical behaviour therapy)
  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Mindfulness

Couples and Family Therapy

James is a trained couples therapist who has helped married, dating, and committed couples navigate relationship challenges of long-term commitments. Including communication, infidelity, boundaries, and parenting.

James’ experience within community settings includes individual and group therapy for teens, with a range of mental health challenges and their families. As well as, supporting families during divorce, custody and co-parenting. As a proud father of three James offers insight, tools, and techniques for many parenting challenges.

Child Therapy

James works with children as young as 5. He brings patience, kindness, and curiosity to help children explore and understand their feelings while gently motivating and encouraging communication. Talk therapy for teens and children is beneficial for behavioural concerns, strengthening self-esteem, anxiety, depression, self-regulation, bullying, ADHD, mood disorders, strengthening bonds and relationships within the family unit, and overall building confidence.

James sessions are solution-focused and emotion-focused to help you achieve your counselling and therapy goals.

Therapy appointments with James Vickers is available in-person at our Bloor West office in Toronto. Virtual and Phone appointments are available to Ontario residents.
