Mindfulness Practice for Children

Child Therapy

Mindfulness is a practice that can benefit children of all ages by helping them build self-esteem, manage stress, and skillfully approach challenges. Resulting in greater happiness and heightened resiliency.

What is Mindfulness and how does it help children?

Mindfulness is using your senses to be aware of what’s happening right now, while noticing things inside of your body as well as outside. This skill helps children learn how to create a calming state within their nervous system [1]. Mindfulness can bring a gentle, accepting attitude to the present moment without judgment or overthinking.

By paying attention to the present moment in an accepting, nonjudgmental manner, children learn to self-regulate and experience relief in that moment. Mindfulness aids in developing the skills that are controlled in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, like focus and cognitive control.

DBT and Mindfulness

The two elements of DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy) are Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. DBT is particularly helpful for children and teens (and adults too) who have difficulties regulating their emotions.

This can therefore have a particular impact on the development of skills including self-regulation, judgment, and patience during childhood. Oftentimes, incorporating mindfulness for those who work with children either is school settings, at-home, or during therapy, helps kids by identifying body sensations, communicating thoughts, and labelling emotions.
