Pregnancy Massage

Massage

Prenatal massage is a safe and effective tool for pain relief, promoting relaxation and increasing energy levels in all stages of pregnancy. Pregnancy is a period of many changes; a woman’s entire body adapts to a new life growing within. Many of these changes are welcomed and enjoyable, although some may be uncomfortable and not as pleasant.

Dealing with the news of an addition to the family can be a positive change but also a stressful one. Regularly receiving massage therapy throughout your pregnancy can help relieve pain and tension, improve sleep, and boost energy levels.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage:

  • Decrease pain and discomfort in your muscles and joints
  • Reduce muscle cramps
  • Improve mood
  • Improve circulation
  • Stimulate the lymph system, aiding in immunity
  • Reduce excess fluid retention
  • Relieve stress and promote relaxation

How does pregnancy massage differ from a regular massage?

There are a number of adaptations to a prenatal treatment compared to a regular massage therapy treatment. Certain areas are avoided at specific times depending on the stage of pregnancy. Joint mobilization techniques are limited due to joint laxity.

Also, during the final stages of pregnancy, your treatment is performed in side-lying. Receiving a massage on a table with a hole in the centre to allow the woman to lie on their stomach should be avoided as this can exacerbate low back injuries and create further pain. Chiropractic and Physiotherapy appointments often utilize a prone (lying on your front) position, but unlike a massage are only for a brief period.
