Clinic

Your first appointment is a chance to meet your practitioner and explore what might have brought you to our clinic. Whether you’re visiting us for a treatment-based appointment or a session with one of our Therapists, the initial appointment reviews your health, identifies your goals, includes a treatment, and creates a plan of care.

Our complimentary “Meet & Greet” appointments offered by our Naturopath, Psychotherapists, and Registered Acupuncturists provides an opportunity to meet and ask questions to see if they’re the right fit for you.

Yes, we offer direct billing to most major insurance companies. It is up to the client to confirm what their specific coverage includes including types of treatment and any applicable limitations.

Clients wishing to use direct billing must be aware that they are responsible for any difference between the cost of the service rendered and the payment from the insurance company.

If you prefer to submit your claim on your own, we will provide you with an itemized invoice that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Please contact us prior to your appointment to provide your insurance company details.

We accept e-transfer, debit, and most major credit cards. You have the option for contactless payment processing for our in-person appointments and the option of paying an invoice electronically for our virtual-based appointments. As an independently-run small business, our preferred method of payment is debit or e-transfer.

We do welcome referrals, but a doctor’s referral is not required to access our services. We often receive referrals from physicians, obstetricians, and midwives for prenatal/postpartum care. As well as, dentists and ENTs for our TMJ treatments.

We require 24 hours notice for all cancellations. Individuals who fail to do so may be subject to a cancellation fee equal to the scheduled service. Your appointment time is reserved for you, should you require to cancel or reschedule we kindly ask that you provide as much notice as possible.

Massage Therapy

We recommended arriving 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to have an opportunity to use the restroom or unwind. Prior to the start of your appointment, you will receive an emailed intake form. This confidential form outlines your health history and provides details of your primary complaint.

Your initial appointment includes a health intake, assessment, and treatment. Assessments often include postural analysis, ROM testing, and orthopedic testing. This enables the therapist to properly address your needs and develop a treatment plan.

The treatment takes place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You lie on a table specifically designed for your comfort.

You have the choice to have the massage fully or partially clothed. Optimally the treatment is performed with skin-to-skin contact. Only one area will be addressed at any given time. You will be fully covered with sheets and a blanket, except for the area being addressed. If you are more comfortable receiving treatment fully clothed, some of our therapists offer manual therapy appointments, as well as CranioSacral Therapy appointments, both of which can be performed over clothing.

The length of each session depends on the individual and what is being addressed. The most common length is 60 minutes, although treatments can also be 30, 45, or 90 minutes. A full body treatment requires at least 60 minutes; 90 minutes is optimal.

The foundation of all massage therapy taught in Ontario is Swedish massage. Our Registered Massage Therapists have also taken additional post-graduate courses or have extensive clinical experience in prenatal and postnatal massage, myofascial release, hot stone massage, sports massage, and TMJ dysfunction.

You are to make yourself comfortable. Many people close their eyes and completely relax while others prefer to talk. If at any time you feel uncomfortable, you are to inform your therapist so that he/she can make any necessary adjustments.

Most people feel very relaxed and can be sleepy. After an initial period of relaxation, some experience a heightened sense of awareness and increased energy. It is important to follow your therapist’s homecare to fully benefit from your treatment and prevent any post-treatment soreness. Occasionally when treating an injured area with therapeutic massage, you may experience mild localized tenderness.

All RMTs in Ontario are required to complete a 2,200-hour, massage therapy program including extensive studies in anatomy, physiology, pathology, and theory. Clinical hours are also included in the program. After graduation, an RMT must successfully pass registration exams with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) and maintain good standing. Continuing education credits are mandatory to maintain registration. Only a member of the CMTO may use the designation of Registered Massage Therapist.

No, although most extended health coverage includes registered massage therapy. Your receipt contains all the information required for your health coverage. It is your responsibility to submit your receipts for reimbursement. We also offer direct billing, or you can allow us to direct bill for you. You may also use your receipts towards your tax return as a medical expense.

Pregnancy Massage

We get asked this question a lot! There is no specific waiting period to have a massage after an uncomplicated birth. Generally, after a c-section, your midwife or OB will discharge you at six weeks and you can start massage. Our RMTs will make specific modifications to ensure you are as comfortable as possible and to avoid any unwanted pressure on your incision.

There are a number of adaptations to a prenatal treatment compared to a regular massage therapy treatment. Certain areas are avoided depending on the stage of pregnancy. Joint mobilization techniques are limited due to joint laxity.

Also, during the final stages of pregnancy, your treatment is performed in a side-lying position. Receiving a massage on a table with a hole in the centre to allow the woman to lie on her stomach should be AVOIDED as this can exacerbate lower back injuries and create further pain. Blood pressure is also monitored regularly.

Psychotherapy

Psychiatrist: In Canada, a psychiatrist is the only mental health professional that can prescribe medications, and provide diagnoses for mental health disorders (e.g. anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc.). Fees are paid for by OHIP.

Psychologist: Psychologists work with a wide range of clients and may perform assessments, treatments, and research in their specialized area (e.g. learning disorders). Fees range from $200 – $300 per session.

Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker: Practitioners trained as either a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker provide “talk therapy” as their treatment. They often use a variety of techniques and approaches based on their training and expertise. Talk therapy/counselling is shown to be effective in numerous research studies and can uncover patterns, belief systems, and support healing in a wide range of mental health concerns.

Psychotherapy and medication combined may be recommended for those diagnosed with severe mental illness. Fees for psychotherapy range from $125 – $180 per session.

Counselling is often synonymous with therapy and is defined as a collaborative effort between therapist and client working together to identify and achieve a desired goal. The therapeutic relationship works to provide solutions to problems that may be causing emotional turmoil, improving communication, providing coping skills, strengthening self-esteem, and changing undesirable behaviours.

We provide therapy/counselling for individuals, couples, teens, and children. Our team of therapists includes both male and female therapists fully trained and licensed as either a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Social Worker. Our team of Therapists have experience and/or additional training in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, and Internal Family Systems.

The amount of time for therapy can depend on the individual. For some, only a couple of sessions may be all that’s required to work through a current hurdle, where others may require greater support to work through more complex problems lasting a longer period of time. The need for therapy can change over time too, sometimes revisiting during times of need.

There are a variety of reasons as to why a parent or guardian may opt for choosing a child therapist in private practice over a school-appointed therapist for their child. Choosing a child therapist in private practice allows access to care right away, and the option of choosing which therapist you’d prefer to work with. There can be long wait times to work with a school-appointed therapist and you’re often limited to the particular therapist associated with your child’s school.

CBT is a type of therapeutic approach that works to address your concern by problem-solving and changing one’s behaviour and thinking. Its premise is our thoughts control our emotions. CBT is especially beneficial for those with sleep issues, anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and more.

Narrative Therapy uses one strengths rather than focusing on their weaknesses. This client-centred approach works to separate the person from their problem and guide them to externalize their issues and guide them through difficult times. Narrative Therapy is beneficial for adults and children.

Mindfulness is a practice on learning how to be present, or be “in the moment”. Mindfulness teaches us to recognize and enjoy the positive in our lives and manage difficulties with more resilience. By focussing on your breath, Mindfulness Meditation teaches you how to stay in the moment, allowing for a more mindful way of life. Regular practice of meditation can teach you how to actively listen, to respond instead of react, to let go of judgment and to let go of expectations of perfection.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture needles are as thin as a strand of human hair. Approximately 30 acupuncture needles can fit into the opening of a standard medical injection needle.

Some people report a mild sensation when a needle is inserted. Other areas can be described as a burning sensation often when inserted into a tight or sensitive muscle.

Our Registered Acupuncturist’s main priority is ensuring your comfort during your session. Using gentle techniques and breathing helps you feel at ease. Some people require a modified approach to treatment and may only start with a couple of needles (or even just one) in order to feel comfortable. Our goal is to help you achieve your health goals using whichever method suits you.

Absolutely not, our Registered Acupuncturists use a variety of modalities as part of their treatments. Treatments can include cupping, tuina, gua sha, acupressure, with or without the addition of needles.

Cupping involves the placement of cups suctioned onto the skin. Cups can be made of plastic, silicon, or glass and be used differently in treatment.  Some cups are static whereas others are moved by the therapist over the surface of the skin.  Cupping is safe, comfortable and effective for many health concerns.  Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed and facilitate healing by altering the blood flow in the body. The overall improved blood flow can promote cell repair and relieve muscle tension. It can also help the body’s resistance to pathogens to reduce illness.

Depending on whether it’s your first appointment or a follow-up the intake length will vary however it can be fairly intensive. During the first intake you may be thinking “why are they asking me about my sleep if my lower back hurts?” It is important for your acupuncturist to gain as much knowledge about your health as possible as traditional chinese medicine addresses the whole body as opposed to only focusing on the area of concern. Be warned that we will ask you about shape of your bowel movements and take a good study of your tongue but only to be better informed as to how to treat you best.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of needles into specific points on the body by a licensed practitioner and acupressure uses firm pressure to massage the points with similar effect.

Acupuncture is recommended for anyone with specific health concerns or more chronic issues as it generates stronger stimulation. Acupressure is a great self-healing alternative that individuals can self-administer at home for minor ailments. The method you choose should largely depend on your comfort level with massage versus needles and the level of treatment you are looking to achieve.
