Motivational Interviewing

How Motivational Interviewing works

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered approach that aims to help individuals identify and resolve ambivalence about behaviour change. It involves a collaborative conversation between the therapist and the client, where the therapist helps the client explore their own reasons for change and encourages them to take steps towards their goals.

MI typically involves four key processes: engagement, focusing, evoking, and planning.

Engagement: works on establishing a rapport with the client and creating a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

Focusing: involves identifying the client’s goals and priorities for behaviour change.

Evoking: helps the client to explore their ambivalence about change and to identify their own reasons for change.

Planning: involves developing a concrete plan for behaviour change, including identifying potential barriers and strategies for overcoming them.

Why Motivational Interviewing is effective

Motivational interviewing is an effective approach because it focuses on the individual’s motivation to change and encourages them to identify and resolve any ambivalence they may have about behaviour change. Research has shown that MI can lead to significant improvements in treatment outcomes, including reduced substance use and improved mental health.

Can Motivational Interviewing be used for depression?

Motivational interviewing has been found to be effective in treating depression, particularly when used in combination with other therapies. This therapy approach can help individuals with depression increase their motivation to make positive changes in their lives. Such as, engaging in self-care activities, seeking social support, and adhering to treatment plans.
