What is The Feldenkrais Method?

The Feldenkrais Method is a system of movement education developed by Israeli physicist and martial artist Moshe Feldenkrais (1904–1984). It promotes awareness through movement to improve physical function, coordination, and overall well-being. Practiced worldwide, it blends principles of physics, biomechanics, and neuroscience to cultivate efficient, effortless motion and enhanced self-perception.

Feldenkrais Method Functional Integration® (FI) is the hands-on, one-to-one branch of the Feldenkrais Method, developed by Moshe Feldenkrais. It’s a form of movement-based learning rather than massage or conventional physical therapy.

What does a Feldenkrais session feel like?

During a Functional Integration session, you’ll remain fully clothed while a practitioner uses gentle, precise touch to guide your body through small, comfortable movements. There’s no forcing or stretching—everything stays within an easy range.

Sessions are usually:

  • very gentle (often surprisingly subtle)
  • slow and exploratory
  • focused on awareness rather than effort

Some people expect something like deep tissue work, but Functional Integration is closer to a guided learning experience for your body.

The practitioner is essentially “communicating” with your nervous system through touch and motion, helping you notice:

  • how you habitually move
  • where you hold unnecessary tension
  • alternative, more efficient ways to organize movement

The core idea of Feldenkrais Method

FI is based on the principle of neuroplasticity—your brain’s ability to reorganize itself. By experiencing new movement patterns in a slow, attentive way, your brain can update how it coordinates your body.

What is Feldenkrais is used for?

People often try Functional Integration for:

  • chronic pain (back, neck, shoulders)
  • recovery from injury or neurological conditions
  • improving posture and mobility
  • enhancing performance (athletes, musicians, dancers)
  • reducing stress and muscle tension

Functional Integration vs. group classes

The Feldenkrais Method has two main formats:

  • Functional Integration® (FI): consists of one-on-one, hands-on treatments.
  • Awareness Through Movement® (ATM): are group movement classes guided verbally and performed independently.

FI is more individualized—tailored to your specific habits, injuries, or goals.
