Nutrition Support in Toronto: My Approach as a Naturopathic Doctor

Naturopathic

By Dr. Rylee MacGregor, ND

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by nutrition advice, or simply don’t know where to start, you’re definitely not alone. It seems like every week there’s a new “best” diet or food trend, and it can be difficult to know what information is actually worth following.

As a naturopathic doctor at Ohana Wellness Clinic, one of the questions I hear most often is, “What should I be eating?” My answer is almost always the same: it depends.

There isn’t one eating pattern that’s right for everyone. My goal isn’t to hand you a restrictive meal plan or tell you to eliminate all of your favourite foods. Instead, I work with you to understand your health, your lifestyle, and your goals so we can build nutrition habits that are realistic, sustainable, and supportive of your overall well-being.

Why Nutrition Matters

Food does so much more than simply provide energy. The nutrients we eat help our bodies produce hormones and neurotransmitters, support our immune system, maintain a healthy digestive tract, regulate blood sugar, repair tissues, and keep our brains and muscles functioning optimally.

Because nutrition influences so many different systems in the body, it’s one of the foundational tools I use in naturopathic medicine. While it isn’t the answer to every health concern, it can play an important role in helping you feel your best.

My Philosophy on Nutrition

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that healthy eating has to be all or nothing. In reality, the most effective nutrition plan is usually the one you can actually stick with.

Rather than aiming for perfection, I encourage my patients to focus on small, sustainable changes that fit into their everyday lives. Those changes might include eating enough protein throughout the day, increasing fibre intake, adding more colourful vegetables to meals, improving hydration, or creating balanced meals that support steady energy levels. These habits may seem simple, but over time they can make a meaningful difference.

Nutrition Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Everyone has different nutritional needs. Your age, activity level, health history, medications, digestive health, hormone status, food preferences, cultural background, and personal goals all influence what nutrition recommendations make the most sense for you.

That’s why I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all meal plans or trendy diets. Instead, I work with each patient to develop recommendations that are individualized and practical.

What Can Nutrition Support Help With?

Nutrition is one piece of the puzzle for many health concerns. Depending on your goals, we may use nutrition to support:

  • Digestive health
  • Energy levels and fatigue
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Hormonal health
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Weight management
  • Inflammation
  • Nutrient deficiencies

Nutrition recommendations are always tailored to the individual and are often combined with other naturopathic treatments, such as lifestyle counselling, targeted supplementation when appropriate, or acupuncture.

What to Expect During a Nutrition-Focused Naturopathic Visit

When you come to see me, we won’t just talk about what you’re eating. We’ll discuss your health history, symptoms, lifestyle, stress, sleep, activity level, and any recent blood work or testing that may help guide your treatment plan. Together, we’ll identify realistic changes that fit your routine and support your health goals. I want nutrition to feel empowering, not overwhelming.
