CBT Pain Management Groups

We recognize that individuals who suffer from chronic pain and associated symptoms
frequently experience comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, or trauma-
related symptoms. Our multi-disciplinary team at Ohana provide a range of therapeutic interventions, including cognitive, somatic, and behavioural approaches, aimed at enhancing individuals’ mental well-being and facilitating a life characterized by autonomy, wellness, and fulfillment.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a brief therapeutic modality utilized to address a diverse array of
psychological and behavioural concerns. The fundamental principle of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) lies in the cognitive triangle, a conceptual framework that depicts the reciprocal relationship among thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. This implies that there exists a reciprocal relationship between our cognitive processes, emotional experiences, and behavioural patterns, such that modifying one aspect will inevitably influence the remaining two components. Consequently, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions aim to address either cognitive processes or behavioural patterns with the objective of disrupting the maladaptive cycle that is occurring.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for chronic pain centers around implementing cognitive and
behavioural modifications aimed at interrupting the maladaptive pattern of thoughts, emotions, and
actions that contribute to the experience of pain. Although complete elimination of pain may not be
achievable, modifying certain cognitive processes and behaviours has the potential to gradually reduce
pain levels. Moreover, it helps cope with the psychosocial impact that living with pain can have on an
individual. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) employs a biopsychosocial framework in its therapeutic
approach and can be effectively integrated into a comprehensive pain management program involving
multiple disciplines. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic approach that empowers
patients to assume agency over their pain condition and cultivate a meaningful existence despite the
presence of pain.

Group therapy for pain management series consists of a cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) session lasting 50-70 minutes, with the duration varying based on the number of participants. Sessions take place once a week for a total of 10 consecutive weeks.
