Dry Needling

Acupuncture

GUNN Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a post-graduate training for dry needling.

Our Physiotherapist Claire McGlynn is fully trained in Dry Needling. This unique treatment is beneficial for stubborn injuries and chronic pain that have not responded well to traditional treatments. Dry Needling is a type of acupuncture involving single-use thin needles to reduce muscle tension and desensitize nerves.

Dry Needling treatments

When inserted into a taut band of muscle, the muscle reacts by “grasping” onto the needle. This desired affect is described as a cramping sensation. This stimulation creates a relaxation reflex of the muscle thereby reducing muscle tension. The insertion site creates a micro-trauma in the tissues stimulating circulation and initiating the healing response. Lastly, this type of needling directly affects the nerve feeding the muscle to reduce its sensitivity providing relief of chronic pain.

Dry Needling is an excellent treatment for tight muscles but also chronic pain patterns. A trained physiotherapist has the ability to assess and recognize the source of neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain occurs when there is no longer an obvious source of pain. When a nerve undergoes ongoing irritation or compression it results in chronic muscle tension. Muscle tension leads to pain, reduced mobility, and decreased functioning. Ongoing pain sensations can persist beyond the typical healing process for an injury.

Common Conditions treated:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries (tendinitis, tenosynovitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome)
